Turning Your House In To a Home

Highland_Model1It’s a moment you never forget. Your realtor has handed you the keys and you step inside for the first time as homeowners. Before you unload your first piece of furniture or carry in a box you can envision your life in your new home. For some, the experience has taken months or years to transpire and it may feel surreal. Once you begin to put your own possessions into your new address you can begin turning the house you purchased into the home of your dreams.

First, decide how you will allocate your space. How will you use each bedroom? Will one room be an office or a guest room? Maybe you’ve always wanted a craft room or maybe it will be a baby nursery for the little one on the way.

Consider painting rooms before you unload the moving truck. Look for paint colors in neutral colors that match your existing furniture. Scour magazines for colors that attract your eye that you can pattern your new home after.

Once you’ve figured out how to divide the rooms up you need to conquer the task of furniture placement. Generally, furniture shouldn’t obstruct a window view and should be centered around a focal point (a picturesque view, a fireplace, or other feature of the room). Living room and family room furniture should also invite conversation for entertaining and hanging out as a family.

Adding enough decorative and task lighting is critical in making your home welcoming and functional. Many homes don’t have sufficient lighting from overhead lighting alone.

In the final stages of decorating, a home should reflect who you are personally. Adding artwork, framed photographs, and other personal touches makes your house feel comfortable and personalized. Be creative and free to mix things up from where you had things in your previous abode.
